Reimagining Menopause: Insights from the New Pause Symposium Experience

Naomi Watts and Alisa Volkman welcoming women interested in menopause and perimenopause to the New Pause Symposium

As I stepped into the vibrant atmosphere of the New Pause Symposium, co-hosted by Naomi Watts and Alisa Volkman, I could feel the electric energy buzzing through the air. The event, held at the stunning 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, promised a day filled with empowering discussions, expert insights, and a celebration of women and this major milestone of life, menopause.

A Morning of Enlightenment

The day kicked off with an invigorating session led by Aimee Cox, a cultural anthropologist from New York University. Her demonstration on body movement was nothing short of transformative. As we followed her guidance, I felt a deep connection to my body and a sense of empowerment that set the tone for the rest of the day.

Dr. Vonda Wright, Orthopedic Surgeon talks about menopause and musckuloskeletal health

Next up was Dr. Vonda Wright, an orthopedic surgeon whose presentation left a lasting impact. She introduced us to the concept of “The musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause,” a term that finally gave voice to the joint pain many women experience. Her emphasis on building lean muscle resonated deeply with me, as she explained how it benefits not just our strength, but our overall health and longevity.

Lunchtime Connections

During lunch, I had the pleasure of sitting with Betty Murry, the creator of the podcast Menopause Mastery. Her wealth of knowledge as a PhD Nutritionist and owner of Living Well Dallas was inspiring. Our conversation ranged from functional medicine to practical tips for growing my business in a financially sustainable manner, and I left our discussion feeling both nourished and enlightened.

Afternoon Insights

The afternoon sessions were equally captivating. Carol Tarvis and Dr. Avrum Bluming dispelled myths surrounding hormone therapy, drawing from their book “Estrogen Matters.” Their presentation was eye-opening, challenging long-held beliefs about estrogen and breast cancer.

Dr. Carol Tarvis advocating for the removal of the black box warning from estrogen products as a result of the faulty Women’s Health Initiative Study interpretation.

Dr. Ashley Winter’s talk on using estrogen to preven urinary tract infections was particularly intriguing. As a practicing physician, I was amazed to learn about this 1993 study that had been largely overlooked. It’s a piece of information I’m already incorporating into my own practice.

Movement and Laughter

The day wasn’t all serious discussions. Samantha Bee provided much-needed comic relief with her relatable and hilarious skit about menopause experiences.

And Holly Rilinger got us all moving with her Lifted Method Menopause Boot Camp. Her focus on strength training and plyometrics was a wake-up call for midlife women who’ve been prioritizing cardio over weights

Closing Thoughts

As the symposium drew to a close, Dr. Lisa Mosconi took the stage to discuss key aspects of her book, “The Menopause Brain.” Her insights into cognitive health during menopause were the perfect capstone to a day filled with learning and growth.

Reflecting on the New Pause Symposium, I’m struck by the wealth of knowledge shared and the sense of community fostered. From Bobbi Brown’s empowering statement about self-confidence “It’s not confidence, I’m just comfortable with who I am.” to Cindy Eckert’s eye-opening discussion on disparities in women’s health, every session left me feeling more informed and empowered.

Dr. Bonza in front of the Brooklyn Bridge

As I left the 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge, I felt a renewed sense of purpose in my work with menopausal and perimenopausal women. The symposium not only provided me with valuable information to enhance my practice but also reinforced the importance of creating a supportive community for women navigating this significant life transition.

The New Pause Symposium was more than just an event; it was a celebration of women’s health, a platform for cutting-edge research, and a testament to the power of knowledge and community. I left feeling inspired, connected, and eager to apply these insights in both my personal life and my medical practice.
